As a City Administrator, Arnie has developed many skills that are very useful for a District Governor.  His leadership style is to handle stress with humor, to promote bottoms up solutions, to anger slowly and forgive quickly.  While he emphasizes that the major role of a governor should be to support the club, which he will do, he is also going to actively promote and encourage clubs to become more involved with the youth of their communities.

After receiving his Governor Nominee Pin from Governor Brenda and Governor Elect Marc, he introduced the First Lady Nominee, his wife Maria. They will both be retired during his year as Governor so that they can devote 100% of their time to the service of Rotary.  Congratulations to a wonderful couple, Arnie and Maria.

Arnie has a long history of commitment to Rotary on a club, district and international level.  He served as President of the Five Cities / Pismo Beach Rotary Club in 1987-88, where he was a charter member, and he also served as President of the Rotary Club of Santa Paula in 1996-97.  He has been involved in our district as Group Rep, Deputy District Foundation Chair and Assistant Governor.  He had also been asked by Gov. Elect Marc Vertin to serve as his Administrative Assistant next year. He is a PRLS and Master PRLS graduate, a Rotary Foundation Benefactor and a multiple Paul Harris Fellow.

Arnie has been active in Rotary International’s Polio Eradication Initiative.  During his year as President in Pismo Beach the club completed their three-year commitment to the PolioPlus fundraising effort in only three months time. He recently went to India to help with their NID and their fight against polio. He has already attended 8 different Rotary International Conventions and is looking forward to developing a District International Project where our members can unite and become involved at all levels.

In addition to completing a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Marketing at Chico State, Nick also achieved the professional designation of Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter and is a lifetime member of the Society of CPCU.

America
america

"To the immediate left of the entrance rests not a continent, but instead the representation of the Western Hemisphere—both North and South America. The seated, alert young woman holds the torch of Liberty, while stalks of corn lie in her lap. The figure of Labor crouches at her side, setting in motion a winged wheel of Fortune. In his other hand, Labor holds mechanical tools of knowledge: a magnet and a prism. Although intended to represent the whole hemisphere, the sculpture does not reference other nations and cultures in a positive manner, and mainly portrays the prosperity of the United States."

- U.S. Custom House website

In 1986, soon after moving to Modesto for a career opportunity, Nick was invited to join Modesto Sunrise Rotary.  He saw this as a way of getting involved in the community and meeting other business people.   After serving on various club committees, Nick became club president for the 1993 -1994 year.  He then went on to become involved in District 5220 operations as well.  Today after stints in 1998-1999 as Assistant District Governor and in 2001 as Club Service Team Captain, he serves as 2003-2004 District Governor.

Over the years Nick has also devoted time to Rotary as District Insurance Chairman, Area representative for Area 6, Chairman of the 1997 and 1998 District Assemblies, Chairman of the District Disaster Relief Committee, Chairman of the Foundation Alumni Committee, and Chairman of the International Friendship Exchange Committee. Nick has volunteered in his community and in World Community Service eye clinics and projects in Mexico and Honduras. Now in 2003/2004, Nick will follow PDG Leonard Bartlett 1980/1981 as the second District Governor from Capax/Giddings, Corby, Hynes, the Modesto insurance brokerage firm where Nick is a commercial insurance broker and partner serving as senior vice president and director.

America’s Poor
america

Saw this man by the local $ store today and decided to take his picture. Also wanted to make a point that unlike what people may think elsewhere in the world, America "does" have some poor. Whether they choose to be poor or really are, I do not know as there are more opportunities in this country (I am talking about the USA) than elsewhere. That might be changing however with the world becoming flatter and the opportunities shifting to other places. Anyway, I am not going to go too much into that as we all know the state of the economy today. Regardless of what it is though, we have to open our hearts and give what we can when we can. I gave him a $ that is crumbled up in his hands if you look closely.

After Graduating from the California Military Academy as a 2d Lieutenant his career included assignments in the Infantry, Artillery and Ordnance Corps.   Included was a stint at the Pentagon and numbers of years in the Missile program.  In between he worked on Special Task Forces for two California Governors. Upon retiring in 1993 Jim was placed on the California National Guard Retired List as Brigadier General.  That’s why many of his Club members call him General Jim. He and his current wife Marjory Mary (Prefers to be called Maggie) of 18 years live in Fair Oaks and between them they have 4 daughters & one son, and five grandchildren.  They like to travel at ever opportunity when Maggie can get him away from hunting and fishing.

Jim joined Rotary in 1990 and is Past President, Vice- President, Secretary, Treasurer & Community Service Chair for Arden Arcade.  Past Community Service Chairman & Public Relations for District 5180.

He is a multiple Paul Harris fellow.

When asked why he wanted to join Rotary his response was, “To make friends and return something to my community”.  Although not mentioned  He started  the process of returning something to the community by coaching Pop Warner football 17 years before joining Rotary.

Returning to California in the early fifties Jim Graduated from Pittsburg Senior High School in the Bay area.  Interestingly enough upon Graduation he was recognized by receiving the American Legion Award for Citizenship. and Leadership.   Which fits the pattern already established as he joined the California National Guard in his senior year in High School.

Modesto Junior College was his next stop, followed by Marriage to his first wife who passed away after 27 years from lung cancer.  He decided that marriage was more important than achieving his goal of an appointment to West Point, but the military was in his blood so he elected to apply and was accepted as a full time technician in the National Guard.  Jim’s military Schools, and assignments are lengthy culminating in Command & General Staff College, B.S. Degree from Hope University in Administration and says he plans on completing his Masters Degree in Management if Rotary Commitments will allow.

Connie belongs to the Rotary Club of Dunsmuir, District 5160, classification Secondary Education – (Retired)

Connie Crawford is a passionate Rotarian and retired educator who lives in the small, rural mountain community of Dunsmuir in far northern California. She joined the Rotary Club of Dunsmuir in 1994 and became club president in 1998. That year her club tied for District 5160 Outstanding Small Club, living up to their motto, “We may be small, but we do it all.”

Rotary District highlights for Connie include serving as the District Youth Exchange Chair, Assistant Governor, and Membership Director. She recalls particularly heartwarming experiences while working at a medical clinic in Costa Rica and raising money that she took to Mexico City to be used to purchase equipment for a hospital. The trip to Mexico City and the subsequent hospital project were the direct result of a GSE Team Leader stealing her Club’s bell and the Club’s heart. Connie traveled to Mexico City to retrieve the bell, resulting in the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

Connie is a Paul Harris Fellow and a Foundation Benefactor.
